Heather's Antique Lace-Sleeved Sweater

My younger daughter is modeling the second sweater I ever knit. I knit this sweater in 1985, and it was the first project I was really pleased with. It was the first sweater I ever added waist shaping to. The lace motif at the bodice was also my idea. It was the first sweater I re-gauged and the first time I made set-in sleeves.

When I made it, I was an ECU knitter who hadn't yet learned to uncross her stitches, so all the knit stitches are twisted. My mattress stitch was also very sloppy.

Despite its faults (which I mercifully was too ignorant to see when it was newly knit), it's still a charming sweater, and it looks good on Matisse. The twisted stitches and crooked seams remind me of how much progress I've made, and it's good to be reminded of that when I fall into the habit of being too self-critical.

I don't remember which yarn or needles I used for this sweater, but it's held up very well. It was my first project in cotton, and the only one of my early sweaters that did not succumb to moths.
