Iris' Spiral Sweater

spiralsweater (38K)

This sweater was a lot of fun to plan and to knit. I used eleven colors of Brown Sheep bulky single-ply wool, which is soft, warm, and durable. I had been using this yarn for small projects for years, and so I had odd lots of the various colors.

Iris had the idea of spiraling the colors around the sweater. I had some figuring to fit the spirals with the raglan increases. Theoretically, the spirals advanced two stitches every row, but the raglan increases and the availability of the different colors of yarn required a lot of fudging.

I kept the balls of yarn in two big baskets by my knitting chair, and moved them from one basket to the other as I worked back and forth. I was working with as many as eight colors of yarn in the same row, so this was definitely a stay-at-home project. The skeins behaved themselves fairly well, and I had no snarly disasters.
